Majorenhaus is a cultural object of regional importance since 1863. As an up-and-coming hotelier, major Melchior Britschgi wanted to build a late Biedermeier-style residence to stand near the shore of Lake Alpnach, with which he wanted to underline his honor and dignity achieved in foreign service in Italy in the 1850s. At the turn of the century, the building with the asymmetrical affiliation of a tower and multi-storey balconies underwent a formative transformation in the sense of the Swiss house style (wooden construction style).
Major Melchior Britschgi-Wallimann (1830-1904) came from simple farming surroundings in the Upper Balisried in Alpnach. After his return Britschgi hit the track as a successful hotelier and tourism promoter (1863: the Hotel "Pilatus", 1864: the Hotel "Bellevue", 1876: the Hotel Klimsenhorn).
In the 1880s, Britschgi was a significant co-initiator in the founding of the joint stock company for the construction of the Pilatus Railway (1886). With the opening of the Pilatusbahn and the commissioning of the new Kulmhotel he experienced his greatest success in the tourist development of the Pilatus. Britschgi was one of the most influential politicians at the community and cantonal levels, including as mayor, cantonal council and government councillor.
